International N5 Symposium ‘Neural Networks and Nonlinearity in Nizhny Novgorod Brings Together Scientists from Russia and Serbia
The International N5 Symposium ‘Neural Networks and Nonlinearity in Nizhny Novgorod’ was held at the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists from September 23 to 26. The event was organised by HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists, with the participation of Sberbank and the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The symposium was held for the second time: the first conference took place in 2025 and attracted considerable interest from the academic community.

Africa, Youth, and Civic Dialogue: Public Diplomacy Discussed at HSE University
In late September, HSE University hosted a roundtable discussion titled Civil Society in African Countries and Youth Participation in Public Diplomacy. Representatives of non-governmental organisations from Ghana, Ethiopia, and Russia, along with students from HSE University’s Bachelor’s Programme in Public Administration, discussed how young people without official diplomatic status can influence relations between countries and how the nonprofit sector can remain sustainable amid declining grant funding.

Self-Monitoring Skills in Online Learning and the Role of Metacognitive Prompts: An Exploratory Study

Psychology in Russia: State of the Art. 2026. Vol. 19. No. 3. P. 89–105.
Anastasia A. Koval, Anna Y. Gorbunov, Podolsky A. I., Aleksandra V. Getman

Background. Self-monitoring is critical for online learning, yet many students struggle due to cognitive load. Students with higher self-monitoring skills man- age this demand better, but which load types they handle effectively remains unknown. Metacognitive prompts are a common support tool, but it is unclear whether they amplify or compensate for skill differences.

Objective. To examine (1) how self-monitoring skills relate to intrinsic (ICL), extraneous (ECL), and germane (GCL) load and performance, and (2) whether metacognitive prompts moderate these relationships.

Design. Participants completed an online reading task with prompts, followed by measures of self-monitoring skills, cognitive load, and a performance test. Lin- ear regression examined relationships between self-monitoring skills, cognitive load, and performance, and whether use of prompts moderated them.

Results. After FDR correction, higher self-monitoring skills showed marginal associations with lower ICL (b=–.48, p=.054), lower ECL (b=–.72, p=.054), and higher performance (b=.92, p=.054), but were unrelated to GCL (b=.09, p=.703). Prompts significantly weakened the relationships between self-moni- toring skills and ICL (b = .99, p = .024), ECL (b = 1.65, p = .016), and performance (b = –2.34, p = .016).

Conclusion. Higher self-monitoring skills may help manage cognitive load more effectively but are unrelated to GCL, suggesting that online learners em- ploy self-monitoring differently than in traditional settings. Preliminary evidence also suggests that metacognitive prompts may compensate for rather than am- plify skill differences. When prompts are provided, outcomes depend less on pre- existing skills

Nikiforova K., Kulikova S., Platonova T. et al., Journal of Modern Foreign Psychology 2026 Vol. 15 No. 3 P. 98–113
The increasing prevalence of technology in daily life has led to a rising demand for IT specialists. In response, educational curricula have been adapted to incorporate coding lessons as early as primary school. However, the cognitive processes underlying computational thinking (CT) — the ability to apply a systematic problem-solving approach akin to computer logic — ...

Monahhova E., Gorodnicheva Y., Morozova A. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 512–527
The rapid proliferation of misinformation in digital environments poses a serious threat to public health, political institutions, and public discourse. Behavioral research has accumulated substantial evidence on why people believe and share false information, yet individual studies address cognitive biases, social factors, or emotional processes largely in isolation. Additionally, the influential integrative frameworks that do ...

Polarization of opinions in the group: a modeling algorithm considering the dynamics of social bonds
Chebotarev V., Andreyuk D., Elizarova Anastasiya et al., Procedia Computer Science 2022 Vol. 213 No. C P. 596–601
The dynamics of opinion in a group are of interest for a number of practical purposes. In particular, consensus helps and polarization of opinions hinders cohesive teamwork. Existing approaches for modeling opinion dynamics mostly do not take into account the dynamism of social relations in a group. This paper proposes an algorithm and a program ...

Background: Motor resonance reflects the activation of the motor system during the observation of others’ actions and is considered a physiological marker of the human mirror neuron system (MNS). This study investigated whether the excitatory and inhibitory balance in the primary motor cortex, driven by glutamatergic and GABAergic mechanisms, is linked to the strength of ...

We develop a novel cloud-function formalism describing the dynamical relationship between sensory-information processing in large-scale brain networks (supraliminal processing) and the content of the mental representation of an observed object. The formalism combines elements of neural field theory for large-scale neural activity with the spatial characteristics of perceived objects and their embedding in the environment ...

Kotov A. A., Зайцева Е.

Rapid digitalization of higher education and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in instruction call for careful evaluation of their impact on students. Traditional face-to-face lectures and those given by an AI-avatar, remote online courses, each create distinct conditions that shape the classroom psychological climate and comfort. Prior research shows AI integration increases engagement, but ...

Cognitive engagement and video watching behaviours in learner-controlled environments: A cognitive load perspective
Gorbunova A., Getman A., Savelyev A. et al., Innovations in Education and Teaching International 2026 P. 1–13
Research on video-based learning often relies on behavioural indicators to infer engagement, yet it remains unclear whether these behaviours reflect meaningful cognitive engagement or mere activity. To address this gap the present study analysed relationships between time-on-video, click frequency, playback speed manipulation, and learners’ intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load in a learner-controlled video environment ...
