This paper studies the behavior patterns among the theatre’s attendants in the process of ticket’s purchase. Since the theatre attempts to balance between the high rate of occupancy and the affordable prices for the spectator, the purpose of the study is to reveal the effects of changes in prices on attendance rate on different levels of attendance. This project is conducted conjointly with the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theater. Data is taken from the sales information system of the theater for four seasons 2011-2012/2014-2015. The data is disaggregated to the level of the seating area and performance and consists of the attendance rate, the set of prices and the performance characteristics. The research explores the determinants of demand using censored quantile regression that accounts for the heterogeneity of effects on different levels of attendance rates and censoring. We have estimated the parameters of demand function and revealed that the aggregated demand is elastic by price, at the same time the elasticity varies across different seating areas. Moreover, demand for the more popular seats and performances expectedly turns out to be the less elastic.

Alexei Malinovskii, Poor But Noble: Translating August Von Kozebue’S Poverty and Nobleness of Mind as a Way of Social Self-Presentation

This paper discusses the problem of the adaptation of a new cultural model by the educated members of the Russian “middle class” in the late 18th century when new social skills and new kinds of the perception of social reality were transmitted to the public through the emotionally very intensive theatre performances. Examining the translation of the drama Poverty and Nobleness of Mind by August von Kozebue and taking into account that the drama was staged at the private theatre of Alexandr Vorontsov, Malinovskii’s patron, in 1799, I suggest that he had some apprehensions about his own noble status which he obtained in a specific way. He seems to face the choice: to act on his feelings as sentimental dramas instructed him and marry a poor but noble girl in 1790s, or wait until Vorontsov’s niece became a wealthy heiress what actually happened in a decade.

This article considers Wyndham Lewis’s autobiography Blasting and Bombardiering (1937) as an instrument for reassessing modernism and representing it to the wider readership of popular literature. Lewis’s employment of autobiography to conceptualise modernism and position himself within/towards it is a marked step away from his criticism where modern subjectivity, historical approach to the self, and fictionalisation of autobiography are repudiated. Such change cannot be explained only by Lewis’s pragmatic motives of raising his profile in the recent literary history and making money by catering to the audience’s taste for autobiographies. This choice of genre also reflects Lewis’s disillusionment with transformative yet detached modernism, which the First World War proved to have been utopian, but with whose aesthetic standards Lewis wanted to maintain association. In this context, the populist intent of the autobiography can be seen as a means of rethinking the failed modernist attempt at objectivity. With the help of the form of popular autobiography, Lewis playfully subjects to detachment modernism itself, undermining the assumptions of its commitment to difficulty, elitism, and autonomy and highlighting the related tensions within his own aesthetics.
