The article examines the new phenomenon in the lives of middle-class Chinese women, manifested in the dramatic change in marital status of women living in Shanghai during the period of the Chinese Republic. In the center of research are such questions as improving of the status of daughters, women’s right to divorce, the appearance of a large number of urban women without family, transformation of the institution of concubines. It is shown that in comparison with the previous centuries due to significant lifestyle changes urban inhabitant obtained new opportunities for self-development, but at the same time faced with many economic and psychological challenges.
