In this article, using the example of the epistolary legacy of the writer and publicist Alexander Ivanovich Ertel, the trajectory of archiving personal collections is traced: from collecting, curation to publication of letters. The question of the social significance of epistolary practice in the post-reform era is raised through the study of the substantive and communicative specifics of correspondence.
