The history of writing consultations within Soviet literary institutions has been
scarcely studied. This article presents and analyzes archival materials reflecting the
establishment and distribution of writing consultations in the 1930s. In addition to government
decrees regulating the activity of this newly introduced institution, this paper offers an
overview of the main publishing projects carried out by consultations at FOSP (Federation of
Soviet Writers' Associations) and the Sovetsky Pisatel publishing house. This paper is focused
not only on the political context and government directives, but also on the industrial and
economic aspects of these departments. The result of the study is the restoration of the early
history of the writing consultation. A review of correspondence, journalistic articles and essays,
and financial reports allows us to conclude that literary consultations were quite ineffective,
highly expensive and time-consuming. However, these factors did not dampen the interest in
this project on the part of either the government or aspiring authors.
