The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Can the Effects of Internet Shutdowns be Estimated Separately from Their Causes? Simulation-Based Inference in the Context of Difference-in-Differences Models

P. 1–3.
Vadim Belenkov, Koncha V., Sedashov E.

We propose a simulation-based approach based on the difference-in-differences model for estimating the causal effects of Internet shutdowns. Using synthetic data, we show that researchers can be largely agnostic about the underlying factors that led to Internet shutdowns when estimating their effects.

Covariate-Balanced Weighted Stacked Difference-in-Differences
Ustyuzhanin V., / Series Econometrics "arxiv". 2026.
This paper proposes Covariate-Balanced Weighted Stacked Difference-in-Differences (CBWSDID), a design-based extension of weighted stacked DID for settings in which untreated trends may be conditionally rather than unconditionally parallel. The estimator separates within-subexperiment design adjustment from across-subexperiment aggregation: matching or weighting improves treated-control comparability within each stacked subexperiment, while the corrective stacked weights of Wing et ...

Целевые каузальные эффекты в социальных исследованиях
Sokolov B., Социология: методология, методы, математическое моделирование 2025 № 61 С. 7–76
This article reviews a set of estimands commonly used in modern applied research to operationalize causal inquiries within the Rubin Causal Model (RCM). I first introduce the basic average treatment effects (ATE, ATT, ATC) and then describe their main extensions, including local and conditional treatment effects, causal interactions, causal mediation, multivalued or continuous treatments, and ...

Causal Estimands for Policy Evaluation and Beyond
Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
This paper reviews various estimands used in modern scientific and applied research to operationalize causal inquiries within the Rubin Causal Model framework. I first introduce the most widely utilized average treatment effects, such as ATE, ATT, and ATC. I then describe their popular extensions, including those targeting local and conditional treatment effects; causal interactions and mediation; effects ...

The influence of online communications on the dynamics of protest activity holds one of the central places in modern political communication research. Penikas H. I., Stefanenko V., Вопросы экономики 2024 Т. 8 С. 89–110

The effects of India's bilateral investment treaties termination on foreign direct investment inflows
Kotyrlo E., Kalachyhin H., Economics of Transition and Institutional Change 2023 Vol. 31 No. 4 P. 1007–1033
India initiated the unilateral mass termination of bilateral investment treaties (BIT termination) in 2016. We consider it a natural experiment to clarify the issue of whether BITs attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to a developing country. We evaluate the effect of BIT termination on the FDI inflows using the double and triple difference approaches (DD ...

Agasisti T., Abalmasova E., Shibanova E. et al., Oxford Economic Papers 2022 Vol. 74 No. 4 P. 1021–1044
In most countries implementing structural transformations in their higher education systems, a key goal of policymakers is to tie the amount of public funding to university performance. The present article analyses the Russian performance-based funding (PBF) reform to provide a quasi-experimental assessment of its effects on university performance. To evaluate the causal effect of PBF ...

Kotyrlo E., Булгаков И. А., Прикладная эконометрика 2021 Т. 62 № 2 С. 125–143
We explore the relationship between fatherhood and marriage and male labour outcomes. We challenge the direction of causality. The difference in differences method for three periods (before, per year, and after an event in family life) allows establishing whether changes in family life follow changes in work life or vice versa. The results are obtained using data from ...
