When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Covariate-Balanced Weighted Stacked Difference-in-Differences
Ustyuzhanin V., / Series Econometrics "arxiv". 2026.
This paper proposes Covariate-Balanced Weighted Stacked Difference-in-Differences (CBWSDID), a design-based extension of weighted stacked DID for settings in which untreated trends may be conditionally rather than unconditionally parallel. The estimator separates within-subexperiment design adjustment from across-subexperiment aggregation: matching or weighting improves treated-control comparability within each stacked subexperiment, while the corrective stacked weights of Wing et ...

Assessing Sustainable Development Through Wavelet-Quantile Based Analysis: Comparative Insights From Four Developed Countries
Çelik A., Veselitskaya N., Damrah S., Sustainable Development 2026 Vol. 34 No. S2 P. 1274–1301
Balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability remains a key challenge for developed economies. The load capacity factor (LCF), as a ratio of biocapacity to ecological footprint, provides an integrated measure of this balance. Yet, little is known about how gross domestic product (GDP), labor productivity, and green technologies interact with LCF over time. The present ...

THE GREEN TRANSITION PARADOX ACROSS NATURAL RESOURCE-RICH ECONOMIES: EVIDENCE FROM BRAZIL, RUSSIA, AND UZBEKISTAN
Pessoa G., Ponkratov V., Durmanov A. et al., Emerging Science Journal 2025 Vol. 9 No. 2 P. 851–867
Resource-rich economies face challenges in pursuing green transitions, with empirical evidence suggesting that such transitions are economically unfeasible, despite varying institutional frameworks. Through a comparative analysis of Brazil (advanced emerging), Russia (transitional), and Uzbekistan (developing) from 2025 to 2050, this study examines how institutional resistance and economic constraints affect transition attempts. Using a Computable General ...

Can the Effects of Internet Shutdowns be Estimated Separately from Their Causes? Simulation-Based Inference in the Context of Difference-in-Differences Models
Vadim Belenkov, Koncha V., Sedashov E., , in: 2024 17th International Conference on Management of Large-Scale System Development (MLSD).: IEEE, 2024. P. 1–3.
We propose a simulation-based approach based on the difference-in-differences model for estimating the causal effects of Internet shutdowns. Using synthetic data, we show that researchers can be largely agnostic about the underlying factors that led to Internet shutdowns when estimating their effects. ...

Penikas H. I., Stefanenko V., Вопросы экономики 2024 Т. 8 С. 89–110
