Revolutions have always played a significant role in the life of societies, but this role has become especially important since the XVI century. In other words, since the early Modern period, the role of revolutions as a driving force of progress has increased dramatically. However, in the following centuries, their role in the transformation of societies and the World System changed significantly. The article analyzes the role of revolutions in the historical process. It is shown why revolutions have become inevitable in Modern times, what is their role in the development of societies, why the latter it has come into conflict with established political and social institutions. On the one hand, revolutions are considered as a pattern of a certain stage in the development of society, and on the other hand, it is analyzed how and why the role of revolutions changes significantly in different periods of history, an explanation is given why revolutions from the "locomotives of development" eventually turned out to be a very costly and unproductive social experiment. An attempt is made to develop some aspects of the theory of revolution (the revolutionary situation, the role of ideology and psychology of society at certain moments, etc.).
