Abstract. A full-text transcript of an archival (in-depth, biographical, expert) interview recorded
in the summer of 2009 in Rostov-on-Don at the pilot stage of research of the history of silence
in the USSR is published with minor abbreviations and saturated comments in memory of Vladimir
Shkuratov, a brilliant university prof, guru of historical psychology, an outstanding scholar, and a
wonderful person.
The interview, from a biographical and expert perspectives, tells the story of the silence of the late
Soviet intellectual, examines cultural forms of production of distance in relation to official culture
and the role of an outsider, and problematizes the existential depth, political ontology and discursive
weakness of Soviet silence. Memory, analytical lens, and the act of publication transform qualitative
data that usually remain in a researcher’s archive of a unique biographical artifact, a documentation of
the ephemeral practices of academic communication, and a cultural technology for extending presence.
