HSE Researchers Compile Scientific Database for Studying Childrens Eating Habits
The database created at HSE University can serve as a foundation for studying children’s eating habits. This is outlined in the study ‘The Influence of Age, Gender, and Social-Role Factors on Children’s Compliance with Age-Based Nutritional Norms: An Experimental Study Using the Dish-I-Wish Web Application.’ The work has been carried out as part of the HSE Basic Research Programme and was presented at the XXVI April International Academic Conference named after Evgeny Yasin.

Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Sensorimotor mapping of emotive semantics in bilinguals
Karliukova A., Malyshevskaya A., Shtyrov Y. et al., , in: Abstracts and authors of the 9th International Conference on Spatial Cognition: Segmentation and Binding in Spatial Cognition (ICSC 2024)Vol. 25: Segmentation and Binding in Spatial Cognition (ICSC 2024).: Springer, 2024.
Existing research indicates involvement of brain systems underpinning spatial abilities in processing emotive semantics in L1: positive emotions are associated with the right part of space, negative ones with the left. Some suggest similar sensorimotor activations in L1 and L2. Others indicate attenuated processing of L2 emotional words. Aims: We investigated differences in sensorimotor biases ...

Experience-dependent neuroplasticity in the hippocampus of bilingual young adults
Gallo F., Voits T., Rothman J. et al., eNeuro 2025 Vol. 12 No. 6 Article ENEURO.0128-25.2025
Models of experience-dependent neuroplasticity predict that the acquisition and extensive use of a new skill trigger a nonlinear trajectory of neurostructural modifications, where initial expansion of relevant brain areas subsequently (once the skill is acquired) gives way to volumetric renormalization. Such predictions also apply in the domain of language during learning and/or simultaneous management of ...

The unique role of bilingualism among cognitive reserve-enhancing factors
Federico Gallo, Jubin Abutalebi, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 2024 Vol. 27 No. 2 P. 287–294
The umbrella term cognitive reserve-enhancing factors refers to those experiential and lifestyle factors (such as intellectual activities, regular physical exercise, healthy nutrition, educational attainment, etc.) that may help individuals to compensate for age-related neural deterioration, thus enabling them to maintain relatively stable cognitive functioning during senescence. In the last 10 years, mounting evidence has shown ...

The interplay between bilingualism and sleep quality in modulating executive performance
Terekhina L., Gallo F., Myachykov A. et al., Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 2025 P. 1–11
We investigated the interactive effects of bilingualism and sleep on executive functioning at the behavioral level. We conducted two experiments using two independent samples of bilingual young adults, the Flanker task to assess executive performance, the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index to measure retrospective sleep quality over a one-month period and the Insomnia Severity Index to ...

Зрительное опознание слов у адыго-русских билингвов по данным теста Рея
Корженевская А. Ю., Гумова Н. Д., Ханова А. Ф. et al., Вестник Томского государственного университета 2025 № 512 С. 22–28
Research addressing the imbalance between aural and written modalities has suggested that consistent language practice involving reading and writing activities enhances lexical access through that specific modality. In individuals with well-developed reading skills, word meaning is accessed through the parallel activation of orthographic and phonological lexicons. Conversely, in individuals with poor reading skills, the orthographic ...

This paper explores a corpus of spontaneous narratives and narrative retellings told by children and adults in Mano and Kpelle, two contacting Mande languages. It focuses on quotative constructions as a key point of grammatical dissimilarity between Mano and Kpelle. In the Mano speech of some bilingual children, however, these constructions are found to manifest ...

Забудьте то, что выучили: влияние медитации на намеренное забывание
Сергеюк А. А., Sherbakova O., Психологический журнал 2022 Т. 43 № 6 С. 28–42
One of the essential aspects of memory efficiency is the lack of recall (forgetting) of erroneous, traumatic, or unimportant information. Therefore, the development of tools for control and facilitation of forgetting is of particular importance. This work aims to investigate the impact of systematic mental training (openmonitoring meditation) on the magnitude of intentional forgetting effect. 106 volunteers (69 ...

Bilingualism, sleep, and cognition: An integrative view and open research questions
Gallo F., Myachykov A., Abutalebi J. et al., Brain and Language 2025 Vol. 260 Article 105507
Sleep and language are fundamental to human existence and have both been shown to substantially affect cognitive functioning including memory, attentional performance, and cognitive control. Surprisingly, there is little-to-no research that examines the shared impact of bilingualism and sleep on cognitive functions. In this paper, we provide a general overview of existing research on the ...

Lexico-Semantic Attrition of Native Language: Evidence From Russian–Hebrew Bilinguals
Gallo F., Bermúdez-Margaretto B., Malyshevskaya A. et al., Language Learning 2024 P. 1–30
Native language (L1) attrition is ubiquitous in modern globalized society, but its cognitive/psycholinguistic mechanisms are poorly understood. We investigatedlexico-semantic L1 attrition in L1 Russian immigrants in Israel, who predominantly usetheir second language (L2), Hebrew, in daily life. We included Russian monolinguals asa control group. We tested two potential causal mechanisms of attrition: L2 interferenceversus L1 disuse. ...

Bilingual experience modulates the embodiment of emotive concepts in non-native language
Karliukova A., Shtyrov Y., Abutalebi J. et al., Language, Cognition and Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 0 No. 0 P. 1–23
This study explores the influence of proficiency, exposure, immersion, age of acquisition, and reduced emotional resonance on sensorimotor biases in first- (L1) and second-language (L2) processing of the emotive lexicon. Eighty-five bilingual students rated positively and negatively valenced words in L1 (Russian) and L2 (English). Our analysis showed facilitated reaction times (RTs) in congruent (e.g., ...

Are Bilinguals More Creative Than Monolinguals? A Meta-Analysis
Acar S., Balayar B., Ozcelik H. N. et al., Journal of Creative Behavior 2024 Vol. 58 No. 4 P. 755–776
This study synthesizes quantitative research on the relationship between creativity and bilingualism. Extant literature underlines the role of developmental, cognitive, and socio-cultural factors to explain the nature of the relationship between creativity and bilingualism. While decades of research frequently indicate a positive link, contrary or mixed evidence has also been documented, necessitating a comprehensive analysis ...
