The article presents the results of an analysis of Russian and International sports federations’ presidents’ and general secretaries’ background. Taking into account the scale of sports industry, it is important to analyze the background and professional experience that industry’s leaders have.  It can help us to understand the sports authorities’ level of competence and find out the perspectives and possibilities of achieving these positions. The authors concluded that being a professional athlete or having an education in management is not always enough. Competent managers in the sports industry need to possess both fundamental knowledge in the field of management and sports, as well as special knowledge in the field of sports marketing, sports economics, and finance. The results of the author's study of the sports top managers’ professional background can be useful for students studying in the relevant spheres and for specialists in the field of education in the formation of curricula and work programs for specialized disciplines.
