Коэффициент эмотивности «Родной язык» в контексте измерения символической мощности миноритарных языков Российской Федерации (на материале Всероссийской переписи населения 2010 и 2020)
This study examines a linguistic situation in Russia, specifically focusing on the phenomenon when participants in sociological polls and Russian censuses indicate as their native language is the language they do not actually speak. This phenomenon emphasizes the emotional significance of the Russian term «mother tongue» (native language) and its unique symbolic status. The authors introduce a new term, «coefficient of emotiveness», which quantitatively measures the ratio of people who do not speak but identify the language as their native language. At the same time, strengthening of ethnic identity and an increasing significance of a language as a symbol are influenced by the socio-political changes. The main hypothesis of the study is that the language conflict of 2017-2018 had an impact on the emotional significance of minority languages in the Russian Federation. A linear mixed-effects model based on Russian census data from 2010 and 2020, revealed a significant positive increase in the coefficient of emotiveness in 2020. Our research confirms that the socio-political context from 2017 to 2020 have influenced ethnic identity and the symbolic significance of minority languages in Russia.
