The article introduces into scientific discourse the so far neglected 1422 chronicle entry reporting the start of minting Novgorod “quarter” coins worth ¼ denga. “Lobets” and “veksha”, which were replaced by the “quarter”, are interpreted as the lower denominations of the kuna system, which survived after kuna itself was cancelled in 1410.
