Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

The effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the performance of airport renovation projects: the case of Pulkovo Airport

Transportation Research Procedia. 2023. Vol. 75. P. 115–125.
Boris A. Lodiagin, Carlos J. Rincon

This paper explores the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the performance of airport renovation projects. The research examines the case of the renovation project of the Saint Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport in Russia, which started in 2010 within the concession agreement of the Northern Capital Gateway and the Government of Saint Petersburg until 2040, and raises the question of how this pandemic influenced the performance of Pulkovo airport renovation project. A Cost-benefit analysis and its sensitivity analysis were used to determine how restrictive measures against the spread of COVID-19 affected the profitability and social indicators generated by Pulkovo Airport. The social effect of infrastructure renewal was determined in accordance with the Efficient Time Allocation and Generalized Cost of Travel theories. The study reveals a decrease in the Net Present Value (NPV) of the renovation project due to changes in the trends of passenger traffic and the number of take-off and landing operations, a decrease in the growth rate of airport revenue and a partial reduction in operating costs. The expected Social NPV of the project decreased by 94.32 percent, and the benefit-cost ratio was drastically reduced to 1.33, from a 4.06, had the pandemic not developed. The sensitivity analysis suggests a shift in the key variables that affect the performance of the analyzed infrastructure project.

Which Model Families Pay? Econometric, Gradient Boosting and Recurrent Neural Network Volatility Forecasts in Active Trading Strategies on the Russian Stock Market
Lysenok N., International Journal of Computer Information Systems and Industrial Management Applications 2026 Vol. 18 No. 17s P. 533–549
This paper asks which families of volatility forecasting models create economic value in active trading, and through which integration channel that value is transmitted. Seven models drawn from four families — econometric (GJR-GARCH, HAR-J), gradient boosting (XGBoost, LightGBM), recurrent neural networks (LSTM, GRU) and a hybrid combining HAR-J with boosting — are compared on the ...

Sanctions and GVC resilience in developing countries: asymmetric shocks and adaptive responses
Fedyunina A., Drapkin I. M., Simachev Y. V., Area Development and Policy 2026
Trade sanctions generate asymmetric shocks in developing economies, reshaping their integration into global value chains (GVCs). Using a gravity framework covering 68 developing countries over the period 2000–2021, this paper examines how sanctions affect forward and backward GVC linkages. We find that sanctions significantly reduce both dimensions of GVC participation: backward linkages suffer deeper and ...

As a consequence, we cannot accurately predict the behavior of the system. ...

Удаленность как отсутствие регулярности: почему для проезда по Якутии нужен мессенджер
Zamyatina N., Решетникова Л. Ф., Городские исследования и практики 2026 № 3
The article demonstrates that one of the unique aspects of transport accessibility in remote areas of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is the systemic impossibility of providing regular transport service, which is due to both natural conditions (use of winter roads, ice crossings, etc., dependent on weather) and the sparse population density. In the latter case, ...

An interval-valued extension of the internal rate of return
Mikhail V. Sokolov, Polyakova E., Annals of Finance 2025 Vol. 21 No. 4 P. 415–433
This paper introduces an interval-valued extension of the internal rate of return (IRR). This extension is motivated by the inability to assign to an investment project a particular rate of return satisfying a set of reasonable axioms. We demonstrate that there exists an essentially unique extension consistent with a natural set of axioms. Notably, in ...

Building performance simulation is most often used to improve the design and at times the operation of buildings. Within a building model, the thermal characteristics of the envelope and the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) equipment are described by parameters that often cannot be estimated with high accuracy (e.g., occupant behavior, building envelope and ...
