Tancheon is a traditional ornamental system for wood architecture wall paintings in Korea, consisting of color palette and ornamental elements. It is widely spread as one of the most representative visuals in Korean National image, translated inside and outside Korea, as a craft it is supported on national level, being established as Intangible National Treasure. Its cultural code can be interpreted as Confucian, Buddhist and Onthologically Korean, which makes it a good source for Cultural studies, but it’s potential is yet to be explored. This paper aims to outline potential color coding issues in tancheon research in regards to its syncretic nature.
