‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Scientists Propose Method for More Efficient Resource Use in Machine Learning
An international group of researchers, including mathematicians from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, has provided a theoretical justification for a simple and computationally efficient method of estimating uncertainty in Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). The paper has been published on the scientific preprint server arXiv.org and presented at AISTATS 2026.

Team Success: Aligning Means with Objectives
In corporations, sports, and academia, people often face challenges they cannot handle alone. In such cases, selecting the right team is crucial. Tatiana Mayskaya, Associate Professor at the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences and the International College of Economics and Finance, together with colleagues from foreign universities, examined team characteristics and found that less diverse teams are better suited to objectives where a high average performance is important, whereas more diverse teams are preferable when avoiding failure is critical. The paper has been published in Economic Theory.

A Geopolitical Approach Toward Deficit and Non-Growth of Democracy in The Middle East [Case Study: Iran and Saudi Arabia]

Geopolitics Quarterly. 2021. Vol. 15. No. 4. P. 234–263.
Afzali R., Mirzadeh Koohshahi M., Mahmoodi A., Seyedi Asl S.

It is argued in this paper that the non-formation or non-growth of democracy in the Middle East is related to geopolitical centrality. The network analysis of Iran and Saudi Arabia in terms of geopolitical centrality indicates that the high geopolitical centrality of these two countries in the existing geopolitical sub-networks at this region is one of the important barriers against realization and promotion of democracy. In Iran before 1979 Revolution, its high centrality under geopolitical sub-networks of security and the west and also after the 1979 Revolution, its high centrality in several ideological sub-networks have made slower Liberal democratic growth in this region.in contrast In Saudi Arabia, high centrality of this country since 1980s in ideological sub-networks and its role in geopolitical sub-networks of west and security on three past decades has hindered formation of Liberal democracy in this country..

Freedom House Ratings' Distortion by US Attitude
Royce D. P., Mezhdunarodnye Protsessy 2026 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 41–63
Although studies have already found Freedom House’s* Freedom in the World rankings to be geopolitically biased, the index remains in use by academia (including Russian academia) with surprising frequency. This article provides detailed and quantitative evidence that Freedom House* is essentially part of the US Government and US political establishment, and is thus in principle liable ...

Based on the analysis of Machiavelli’s political writings such as “Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius”, “The Prince” and “The History of Florence”, the article shows that attempts made repeatedly over the past few decades by such scholars as Tony Negri, John McCormick, Agnes Heller, Claude Lefort and Pierre Manent to declare Machiavelli ...

Мухаев Р. Т., Zhdanov A., М.: НИЦ Инфра-М, 2023.
The mobility of political changes and the multiplicity of determinants that determine their course make them a rather difficult object to study. Moreover, the process of uncontrolled changes (political revolutions) is unpredictable when a society moves from one type of development and political system to another. This happened in the 90s of the XX century ...

The first type of challenges comprises the ...

USAID Democracy Promotion as a Possible Predictor of Revolutionary Destabilization
Maksim Kostin, Korotayev A., Comparative Sociology 2024 Vol. 23 No. 2 P. 240–278
USAID democracy promotion programs might not only influence the democracy levels, but also increase the likelihood of revolutionary uprisings in the recipient states. Democracy promotion can strengthen political opponents of the incumbent regime via support for alternative media, civil society groups and political parties, on one hand, and, on the other, support democratic institutions that ...

Revolution and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century
Andrey Korotayev, Andrew Zhdanov, Leonid Grinin et al., Cross-Cultural Research 2025 Vol. 59 No. 2 P. 180–215
In this article, we analyze an inverted U-shaped relationship between the type of regime (on the autocracy-democracy scale) and the risks of revolutionary destabilization. Anocracies tend to be more vulnerable to revolutionary destabilization than full autocracies or full (consolidated) democracies. We also point to a strong positive association between the weakening of autocracies and the ...

Revolutions and Democracy. Can Democracies Prevent Revolutionary Armed Violence?
Ustyuzhanin V., Korotayev A., Comparative Sociology 2023 Vol. 22 No. 1 P. 95–137
In recent years, the question of what form a revolutionary uprising will take – armed or unarmed – has been raised more often. This is because, as shown by numerous studies, revolutionary nonviolence can explain why an uprising fails or succeeds to lead to democracy. In the recent decades the likelihood of revolution being nonviolent appears to ...
