‘Working with AI Solves a Wide Range of Engineering Problems
Artificial intelligence is a working tool based on a balanced combination of algorithms and engineering. Experts and doctoral students from the HSE Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics explain how AI technologies can improve an application, device, or system, and what engineering tasks are solved in the process.

‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

A Modern Aspect of Instrumental Literacy: Coding

Ch. 13. P. 367–390.
Parandekar S., Patarakin Y., Yayla G.

This chapter discusses a new dimension of domain-general literacy pertaining to working with information—coding. The authors make it clear why everyone today needs to have some level of coding skill, and how the latter can be developed. Coding is a dimension of instrumental literacy (based on specific tools): It is about one’s ability to use sign systems and communication tools in “human–to– machine” interaction. Such interaction is not limited to any specific area of life but instead it is applicable everywhere, being thus ubiquitous. It is important to highlight the connection between coding and computational thinking—just like traditional 3Rs literacy (reading, writing, arithmetic), it is inextricably linked with thinking skills.

Metasystem Transitions in Education: Human-AI Interactions as Catalysts for Computational Thinking
Patarakin Y., Korchak A., Burov V. et al., BRAIN. Broad Research In Artificial Intelligence And Neuroscience (Romania) 2025 Vol. 16 No. 4 P. 72–85
The paper explores how human–AI interactions, particularly with generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI), serve as catalysts for developing computational thinking (CT) as a creative meta-competence. Grounded in a theoretical framework that synthesises Vygotsky’s mediated learning, Lotman’s Semiosphere, and Turchin’s Metasystem Transition theory, the study conceptualises education as a process of collaborative meaning-making within human–machine teams. Two ...

Children Learning to Code: Essential for 21st Century Human Capital
Patarakin Y., Parandekar S., Yayla G., World Bank Group, 2019.
This book explores the premise that coding is an essential 21st century skill required for all. Learning of coding does not merely mean learn the syntax, grammar and usage of a specific computer language like Python or Ruby, but the deeper concept of computational thinking. It is possible to learn aspects of computational thinking without ...
