‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

The report is devoted to the analysis of measures of infrastructural support of student entrepreneurial initiatives in Russian universities. The contribution to the success of the main infrastructure elements of entrepreneurship support was assessed: educational opportunities, business incubator, accelerator, startup studios, communities, etc. The information openness of support measures through the official websites of universities is considered. The study is based on two samples: 1) a sample of 48 Russian universities (51 units of analysis, taking into account the HSE campuses); 2) the data of the MEE survey of 2022 on a sample of students of Russian universities of full-time undergraduate and specialist studies. The analysis is based on the analysis of university websites, as well as survey data of respondents regarding the development opportunities of student entrepreneurship.
