Do Mistakes Provoke New Mistakes? Evidence from Chess
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON GAMES. 2024. Vol. 16. No. 2. P. 483–488.
We investigate how the mistakes of professional chess players affect the quality of their further moves in the same game. Using a database of games played by top chess players, Stockfish chess engine evaluations, and an ordered probit regression analysis, we found clear evidence that most mistakes provoke tilt, which leads to less accurate future play, while in reaction to serious blunders players instead discipline their play.
