HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

The fragmentation of views in a democracy
Samsonov A., Economics of Governance 2021 Vol. 22 P. 215–256
Are voters in democracies more competent if there are more media outlets? To answer this question, I provide a game-theoretic model of media capture and political persuasion in democratic countries. In the model, there are two politicians, the Incumbent and the Challenger. They co-opt the media by offering them access to information. In exchange, the ...

Minorities in Dictatorship and Democracy
Samsonov A., Journal of Public Economic Theory 2025 Vol. 27 No. 5 Article e70060
How does the level of democracy in a country affect the government's treatment of ethnic minorities? I use the Baron–Ferejohngame to model bargaining over government formation and resource division in an ethnically fragmented society. Each ethnicgroup is a unitary actor, voting weights correspond to ethnic group sizes, and recognition probabilities are proportional to votingweights. The ...

Many research articles document a systematic relationship between ethnic identity and voting. At the same time, there is a dearth of studies about the concrete mechanisms on how ethnicity and voting are connected ...

Clemens Puppe, Burka D., Szepesváry L. et al., / Series ISSN 2190-9806 "KIT Working paper in Economics". 2020. No. 145.

The article analyzes authoritarian regimes within the post-Soviet territory in terms of informal practices (clannishness, clientelism and patronage) and their characteristics used by political leaders to form a power coalition. It has been argued that any of these informal practices determine a power coalition of a certain size, which is consequential for regime sustainability. Power coalitions formed on the ...

Kriesi H., Malet G., Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties 2019 P. 1–20
Do voters punish governments more severely during international economic crises or do they discount exogenous shocks as they recognize the government’s limited “room of manoeuvre”? The current literature provides conflicting answers to this question. This study argues that in such contexts citizens’ economic perceptions are less likely to predict their sanctioning behavior but that, nonetheless, ...
