Научно-образовательные путешествия М.С. Куторги в Англию и Грецию: от Лондона до Афин, включая исследования в Беотии
The article deals with the educational travels of the outstanding Russian researcher of classical antiquity M.S. Koutorga, which he committed to England and Greece. Travel to England was not given attention in previous publications about the activities of M.S. Koutorga. This trip can be considered as a preparation for a subsequent visit to Greece, where M.S. Koutorga conducted research, especially in Boeotia. The sources of our research are archival materials, most of which are published for the first time. In England, Koutorga visited the famous researcher of the ancient topography of Greece, Colonel William Martin Leake, who presented to M.S. Koutorga three of his works. Colonel Leake, through a chain of personal connections, recommended Koutorga to Cambridge, Oxford and the British Museum. In addition, Mikhail Semenovich became a member of the Cavendish Literary Club, as stated in a letter from Lionel Booth. Thus, having the necessary literature, M.S. Koutorga knew those places in Greece that were less affected by previous studies, which gave him the opportunity to make his own. Having visited Greece, M.S. Koutorga also secured the necessary recommendations. He was associated with A.M. Kumanis, A.R. Rangavis, I.K. Paparrigopulos and other statesmen and researchers in Greece. All this made it possible to organize the trip in the best possible way and conduct research for subsequent publications, a special place among which is the study of the region of Plataea in Boeotia. The article is supplied with a map of the Plataean region, on which the names mentioned by Koutorga are marked.
