Целью работы является обзор генезиса исторической мысли — от её античных протоформ до настоящего времени. Широкомасштабная критика самих оснований европейской науки, происходившая на протяжении многих десятилетий, начиная со второй половины XIX в., приведшая к смене научной парадигмы на рубеже XIX и ХХ вв., требует не только осмотрительности при выстраивании объяснительных моделей, но и обоснования самого исследовательского инструментария, прежде чем его применять. В статье в качестве инструментария выступает сама история как «металогика для всякой логики». Европейская культура имеет два основных питающих истока: иудео-христианскую традицию и традицию античной греко-римской классики. Оба русла внесли свой вклад в формирование исторической мысли. Согласно библейскому откровению, Бог является творцом не только мира, но и самого времени. Библия содержит саму идею исторического процесса, имеющего начало и конец, и, главное, смысл.
В статье дано описание специфики библейской философии истории, прослеживаются библейские основания формирования европейской исторической мысли, пути её трансформации в Средние века, эпоху Ренессанса и в Новое время.
В XIX в., при переходе к неклассическим философским системам, параллельно возникают и неклассические модели исторического процесса. Возникает кризис историзма, который в ХХ столетии углубляется и, как следствие, происходит активизация эсхатологической тематики в разных вариантах («конец истории», «постистория» и т. п.).
