The review aims to represent to the readers the monograph written by Vladimir Shishkin and Iskra Schwartz, dedicated to the history of Russian-French contacts from the beginning of Kievan Rus’ (10th-11th Centuries) to the end of the 16th century, when some similar manifestations of political crisis emerged in the life of both countries. Despite the popularity of subjects related to the diplomatic history of Rus’ and Russia, this topic has not yet received a systematic interpretation in Russian historiography and often has been studied fragmentarily. Relatively rarely the problem of Russian-French relations received attention from professional medievalists - the researchers of the history of those countries that could function as counterparty of the Russian lands. The author of the review notes the research and literary merits of the monograph and analyzes some controversial points in the concept of rapprochement between Russia and France built by the authors at the turn of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era.
