Ambiguous tDCS: variability of the brain response to transcranial direct current stimulation in reinforcement learning task
P. 41–45.
Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) is a popular approach for studying and modulating cortical function. Currently, numerous studies use TES in behavioral experiments with no physiological control. The authors of such studies rely on the assumption of fairness and complete predictability of their stimulation models. However, control reveals the actual effect induced by the stimulation rarely matches the one previously modeled. Our study illuminates diverse effects caused by tDCS and brings up the importance of physiological control when including TES in the research design.

This study investigated the causal role of the human frontopolar cortex (FPC) in managing counterfactual strategies during decision-making under uncertainty. Using a combination of cathodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) and computational modeling, we examined how cathodal stimulation, preliminarily simulated with SimNIBS, affects the retrieval of alternative strategies in the task that constantly provokes ...

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) stands as one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting millions worldwide. While traditional pharmacological interventions have been the cornerstone of ADHD treatment, emerging novel methods such as transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and neurofeedback offer promising avenues for addressing the multifaceted challenges of ADHD management. This review paper critically ...

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on acquisition of novel vocabulary remain controversial, which could be related to specific neural mechanisms underpinning different language learning strategies. To comprehensively assess tDCS effects on fast mapping (FM) and explicit encoding (EE) of novel words, we modulated tDCS stimulation regime (anodal/cathodal/sham), stimulated hemisphere (left/right), site (Broca/Wernicke/their right-hemispheric ...

This study aimed at systematically assessing the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on novel word learning. Using a sample of 288 healthy volunteers, we modulated tDCS stimulation regimes (anodal/cathodal/placebo), stimulated hemisphere (left/right), site (Broca/Wernicke/right-hemispheric Broca/Wernicke homologues), and assessed tDCS effects on different learning protocols: fast mapping vs. explicit encoding, with vs. without articulation. ...

Grapheme-color synesthesia (GC-S) is a neurological condition in which the perception of a grapheme elicits the experience of color or even the visual representation of that grapheme as colored. Previous research using transcranial magnetic stimulation on GC-synesthetes demonstrated enhanced excitability of the visual cortex. Consequently, we hypothesized that using anodal "offline" transcranial direct current stimulation ...

Recent neurophysiological studies provide inconsistent results of fronto-parietal network stimulation for altering working memory capacity. This study aimed to boost working memory capacity by manipulating the activity of the fronto-parietal network via dual-site High-Definition transcranial direct current stimulation. Forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to three stimulation groups, receiving either simultaneous anodal stimulation of the frontal ...

Despite the clear importance of language in our life, our vital ability to quickly and effectively learn new words and meanings is neurobiologically poorly understood. Conventional knowledge maintains that language learning—especially in adulthood—is slow and laborious. Furthermore, its structural basis remains unclear. Even though behavioural manifestations of learning are evident near instantly, previous neuroimaging work ...

In recent years, possible therapeutic effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have been widely investigated in studies dealing with different types of neural pathologies. Initially, tDCS was applied for treatment of patients with motor stroke; later on, it was introduced into studies of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, and post-stroke ...
