Музыкальное наследие в Северной Англии: примеры Шеффилда, Манчестера и Ливерпуля

Since the 1980s, musical history has become an important economic and symbolic resource for the revival in many British cities (so called “culture-led regeneration”). The paper is focused on the problem of understanding and working with musical heritage in the post-industrial region of Northern England (Midlands) on the example of three cities: Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool. These cities demonstrate different ways of constructing and representing the musical heritage in the urban space: predominantly “top-down”, predominantly “bottom-up” and “in-between”. In the case of each city, the specifics of their regeneration projects are considered with an emphasis on the musical past. Despite the fact that not all projects were ultimately successful, they definitely demonstrate the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the specifics of musical heritage in each case, as well as the need to include different agents in reflection about it.
