Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

Shumilin M., Hyperboreus 2026 Vol. 32 No. 1 P. 98–105
In the article, a set of emendations is proposed for the text of Cicero’s speeches. In Pro Archia 28, a locus vexatus, it is proposed to read aduocaui instead of the manuscript reading (ad)(h)ortaui. In Pro Caelio 18, a conjecture liceat instead of the transmitted liceret is proposed. In Pro Ligario 24, the recommended reading ...

von Büttner Сyrill, Textus 2024 No. 32/2 P. 156–167
This article discusses a potentially difficult reading that occurs in the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa) in Isa 5:18, namely, the word ‮השי‬‎. This manuscript is the oldest Hebrew copy of the book of Isaiah, dating from the second half of the second century BCE. The reading ‮השי‬‎ was previously thought to be the result of a ...

The Family of the Palatinus Latinus 846 in the Manuscript Tradition of the Passio Susannae (BHL 7937)
Shumilin M., Revue d'Histoire des Textes 2025 Vol. 20 No. 1 P. 251–280
In the article, an attempt is made to apply stemmatic procedures to the manuscript tradition of the Latin Passio Susannae (BHL 7937, dated to the fifth or sixth century ad), in particular to a family which, it is argued, includes mss Città del Vaticano, BAV, Pal. lat. 846; Karlsruhe, BLB, Aug. perg. 32; Zürich, Zentralbibliothek, Rh. 81 and Darmstadt, ULB, 383 together with the famous lost codex Fuldensis. The author concludes that the Pal. ...

A Note on Pliny the Elder (HN 9. 126)
Shumilin M., Classical Quarterly 2025 Vol. 75 No. 1 P. 516–519
The article argues for an emendation in Plin. HN 9.126. Modern editors are accustomed to print the text cum testa uiuas, adopting J. Hardouin’s conjecture for cum terra uitis, the reading transmitted in most manuscripts. Nevertheless, the overlooked manuscript reading contritis conchis allows us to deduce a palaeographically neater solution contritis if conchis is considered a gloss which entered the text. ...

Текстологические инновации в новом издании Плиния Старшего. Подход к конъектуральной правке
Shumilin M., Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории 2025 Т. 32 С. 54–66
In the article, the question of the approach to conjectural intervention is discussed in the context of the new edition of Pliny the Elder. It is suggested that conjectural approach should not be automatically rejected but that in each case a balanced judgement is in order as to whether the transmitted text can stand and ...

Pliny the Elder's List of Egyptian Nomes
Shumilin M., Mnemosyne. A Journal of Classical Studies 2025 Vol. 78 No. 3 P. 562–570
It is suggested in the article that a closer examination of the manuscript readings might help to explain two notoriously problematic items in Pliny the Elder's list of Egyptian nomes (NH 5.49), viz. Latopolites and Panopolites, both placed out of the geographic order. In particular, it is argued that the inclusion of both readings in ...

The advancement of observational technologies and software for processing and visualizing spectro-polarimetric microwave data obtained with the RATAN-600 radio telescope opens new opportunities for studying the physical characteristics of solar plasma at the levels of the chromosphere and corona. Княгиня Гертруда и русское летописание XI в.

At the year 6538 (AD 1030), the entry on an uprising occuring in Poland after the death of King Boleslav the Brave reads in many Rus chronicles. This entry is inaccurately dated and shortens the events of about fifteen years to as little as two phrases of text. However, even such a reference of Old ...

Shumilin M., Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология 2024 Т. 28 № 2 С. 1589–1605
The article considers apparently problematic lines in Francesco Filelfo’s (1398–1481) epic poem Sphortias (1451–1473) as published in the editio princeps by Jeroen De Keyser (2015). Although the edition is clearly based on an accurate and attentive work with the manuscripts, there still remain places there that beg further questions. I suggest that they divide in ...

Заметки о Плинии Старшем
Shumilin M., Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории 2023 Т. 27 С. 59–69
In the notes a set of conjectural solutions to the textual problems in three passages of Pliny the Elder’s Natural history is porposed (Plin. NH praef. 4, 7.1 and 7.16). Several factors contribute to the need to reconsider the standard text in these places: the number of scholars who set to look for new textual solutions in Pliny ...

The article reconsiders the problem of stemmatic classification of Plinian manuscripts in book 1 of the Natural history, which consists of indices to the following 36 books. Many manuscripts include double texts of the indices, placed correspondingly in book 1 and before the indexed book itself, and a separate stemma is required for this expanded ...
