Pliny the Elder's List of Egyptian Nomes
Mnemosyne. A Journal of Classical Studies. 2025. Vol. 78. No. 3. P. 562–570.
It is suggested in the article that a closer examination of the manuscript readings might help to explain two notoriously problematic items in Pliny the Elder's list of Egyptian nomes (NH 5.49), viz. Latopolites and Panopolites, both placed out of the geographic order. In particular, it is argued that the inclusion of both readings in modern editions of Pliny is a result of a misinterpretation of the manuscript data; instead of Latopoliten, Letopoliten should be read, and the word Panopoliten should be deleted from Pliny's text.
