In traditional historiography, Milan of the Renaissance still remains in the shadow of Florence, because against its background it looks like a retrograde, a bulwark of medieval knightly and other ideals. Through a combination of visual and written sources, it is necessary to review existing clichés. Despite a highly beneficial impact of the methods introduced into historical research by a phenomenon of Visual turn, and their successful application by an increasing number of professional historians, some theoretical questions due to the specifics of working with visual sources as historical evidence require further reflection. The late Middle Ages and the Renaissance are traditionally associated with the flowering of art and a unique court culture. However, the methodology of visual research offers to consider visual sources not so much from the point of view of aesthetics, but to understand how ideas about knowledge and power have been changed through visualization and verbalization strategies.
