In Search of Constantinople: A Guidebook through Byzantine İstanbul, and Its Surroundings
Each chapter of this guidebook includes a general map of the area it covers plus a number of
more detailed maps that allow one to navigate the back streets of Istanbul. Maps of
the present-day city show all the preserved Byzantine monuments, as well as the
approximate positions of the buildings that did not survive, but which researchers
have managed to locate.
ns. The description of each Byzantine monument includes an
account of the most important historic events associated with it. Each monument is
revealed through the eyes of the Byzantines themselves. Readers will not only find
themselves at a spot where a Byzantine school once stood, but will also learn what
the pupils studied there and how they cheated. Tourists will not simply be led to a
Constantinopolitan hospital, but will be provided with a detailed and picturesque
account of what was treated there and how.
There are no footnotes in the book, but each chapter ends with a list of
Byzantine sources and basic scholarly works in nine languages.
