HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

2021. Т. 8. № 1–2. С. 4–13.
Zdorova N., Kaprielova A., Lopukhina A., Барцева К. Н., Dragoy O.

Phonological and orthographic processing are reported to be among the strongest predictors of reading development
across different Indo-European languages. The relative impact of these factors can be modulated by cross-linguistic script and orthographic differences, as evidenced by many studies in European languages. The present study investigates the effect of phonological and orthographic processing on reading speed in 6- to 12-year-old (1 – 5 grades) Russian-speaking children (N = 117), taking into account age as a factor as well. Phonological and orthographic processing were assessed with behavioral tests. The results revealed that both skills predict reading speed in Russian. Moreover, the age of young readers can also be a non-linguistic predictor of reading speed in Russian, especially in children between 6 and 10 years old. Children aged 10 to 12 also demonstrated some variability in reading speed, although an increase in reading speed was no longer observed.

Juxtapositional vs. possessive-like encoding in Russian specificational constructions
Logvinova N., Russian linguistics 2026 Vol. 50 Article 11
This paper presents the first in-depth corpus-based study of a previously overlooked syntactic variation in Russian: the competition between juxtapositional (Nominative) and possessive-like (Genitive) encoding of the second noun (the term) in specificational constructions (e.g., ponjatie čest’ (notion.NOM honor.NOM) vs. ponjatie česti (notion.NOMhonor.GEN) ‘the notion of honor’). While typological research has established cross-linguistic preferences for one encoding strategy over another, intralinguistic variation ...

Reaction Time in Phonological Tests Predicts Reading Skills in Preschool Children
Eremicheva T., Dorofeeva S., , in: 12th Novi Sad workshop on Psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic and clinical linguistic research.: Novi Sad: Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad, 2025.
Phonological processing (PP) skills are widely known as one of the most effective predictors of reading acquisition (Wagner et al., 1994). Children with poor PP skills are more likely to face reading difficulties. Thus, it is necessary to choose age-appropriate testing instruments that will indicate the possible impairments as early as possible. Former researchers mostly estimated the predictive power ...

Staroverova V., Lopukhina A., Zdorova N. et al., Journal of Experimental Child Psychology 2023 Vol. 226 Article 105571
Studies on German and English showed that children and adults can rely on phonological and orthographic information from the parafovea during reading, but this reliance differs between ages and languages. In the present study, we investigated the development of phonological and orthographic parafoveal processing during silent reading in Russian-speaking 8-year-old children, 10-year-old children and adults ...
