‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

This study aims to investigate global sentence reading patterns in Russian-speaking
children in grades 1 – 6 and adults. All participants (N = 231) read 30 sentences comprising
the child version of the Russian sentence corpus while their eye movements were tracked.
The fixation data were analyzed following the protocol of scanpath analysis. The analysis
allowed us to detect five typical reading patterns that we named beginner, intermediate,
upper-intermediate, advanced, and fluent. These patterns differed in reading speed,
word or sentence rereading, and skipping. We found that first-graders were more likely
to adopt the beginner and intermediate reading patterns; second- and third-graders
followed intermediate and upper-intermediate patterns; fourth-to-sixth-graders adopted
upper-intermediate and advanced patterns; and adults preferred the fluent reading pattern.
Interestingly, each participant was able to adopt two to five patterns and switch between
them, probably, adjusting their reading to the complexity of the sentence.

Metaphor in the Mental Lexicon: Investigating Different Types of Polysemy via Eye-Tracking and Behavioral Experiments
Valentina Apresjan, Alexander V. Orlov, Koncha K. et al., Metaphor and Symbol 2026 Vol. 41 No. 1 P. 5–38
This study investigates the mental representation and processing of the two types of metaphorical senses in Russian polysemous verbs and adjectives using eye-tracking, sensicality judgment, and semantic clustering tasks. The metaphorical senses under study differ in their semantic proximity to the literal sense, with “proximal” metaphors (e.g. “raise prices”) retaining more semantic components, and “distal” ...

The effect of the global language context on bilingual language control during L1 reading
Parshina O., Smirnova A., Goldina S. et al., Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 2025 Vol. 28 No. 2 P. 577–587
The proactive gain control hypothesis suggests that the global language context regulates lexical access to the bilinguals’ languages during reading. Specifically, with increasing exposure to non-target language cues, bilinguals adjust the lexical activation to allow non-target language access from the earliest word recognition stages. Using the invisible boundary paradigm, we examined the flow of lexical activation in ...

Horizontal mapping of time-related words in first and second language
Malyshevskaya A., Fischer M., Shtyrov Y. et al., Scientific Reports 2024 Vol. 14 No. 1 Article 9675
The existence of a consistent horizontal spatial-conceptual mapping for words denoting time is a well-established phenomenon. For example, words related to the past or future (e.g., yesterday/tomorrow) facilitate respective leftward/rightward attentional shifts and responses, suggesting the visual-spatial grounding of temporal semantics, at least in the native language (L1). To examine whether similar horizontal bias also accompanies access ...

Lexical and perceptual biases in speakers’ syntactic choices
Myachykov A., Scheepers C., Discourse Processes 2024 P. 1–10
Russell Tomlin’s groundbreaking work laid a foundation for the explorations of the interplay between linguistic and nonlinguistic factors determining structural choice during sentence production. The present article investigates the interplay between two such factors, lexical priming and visual cueing, which may prioritize a particular referent of an event for privileged subject status within a sentence. To this end, ...
