HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

Working memory (WM) may largely determine human cognitive capabilities and, consequently, daily functioning and performance in leading activity for diverse ages. Therefore, WM training seems to be relevant for both healthy individuals and patients with neurological or mental conditions of a broad age range. The kinds of WM training described in the literature are highly ...

Unlocking Stress Coping Mechanisms: Implications for Salivary Antioxidant Defense and Trace Element Homeostasis
Portnova G., Proskurnina E., Liaukovich K. et al., Journal of Molecular Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 76 Article 19
This study investigates the relationship between stress coping ability, salivary antioxidant capacity (AOC), and trace element concentrations, focusing on zinc (Zn) and potassium (K). A cohort of 73 participants, divided into groups based on stress coping ability (SCA) (“adaptive”, “intermediate”, and “maladaptive”), underwent cognitive tasks while physiological and behavioral data were collected. Saliva samples were ...

Deciphering the neural responses to a naturalistic persuasive message
Ntoumanis I., Sheronova Y., Davydova A. et al., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 2024 Vol. 121 No. 43 Article e2401317121
Effective health promotion may benefit from understanding how persuasion emerges. While earlier research has identified brain regions implicated in persuasion, these studies often relied on event-related analyses and frequently simplified persuasive communications. The present study investigates the neural basis of valuation change induced by a persuasive healthy eating call, employing naturalistic stimuli. Fifty healthy participants ...

Нейропсихологическая диагностика и реабилитация пациентов с нарушениями регуляторных (управляющих) функций при поражениях головного мозга различной этиологии
Баулина М. Е., Григорьева В., Varako N. A. et al., Национальный психологический журнал 2023 Т. 18 № 4 С. 63–77
Background. Disorders of regulatory (control) functions are often observed in neuropsychological practice in brain le sions. This fact determines the high practical significance of timely neuropsychological diagnosis and rehabilitation for this category of patients. Daily functioning with impaired regulatory (control) functions is carried out in conditions of limited capabilities of the patient, which significantly worsens the quality of his/her ...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left middle frontal gyrus modulates the information people communicate in different social contexts
Martín-Luengo B., Vorobyova A., Feurra M. et al., Scientific Reports 2023 Vol. 13 No. 1 Article 9995
Neocortical structures of the left frontal lobe, middle frontal gyrus (MFG) in particular, have been suggested to be linked to the processing of punishing and unpleasant outcomes in decision tasks. To assess the role of left MFG (lMFG) in communicative decisions, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to inhibit its function during communicational exchanges under two types of ...
