The article discusses the prospects for using the theoretical and methodological Arsenal of political science in the study of the history of propaganda. The working hypothesis is the assumption that we are not talking about an interdisciplinary, but a multi-disciplinary interaction, that is, the use of different versions of neo-institutionalism (primarily historical) and case study tools to study those aspects of the history of propaganda that until recently were the sphere of interest of specialists in the field of social psychology and communication theory. Attention is drawn to the fact that in political science, research design is largely determined by the nature of the empirical base, which is also relevant for modern historians who seek to give source studies a methodological character.

Political science provides propaganda historians not only with a strict theoretical and methodological framework, but also with qualitative methods for analyzing documents and interpreting the results obtained, in particular, case studies. In particular, based on a new approach to propaganda institutions as formal and informal practices, taking into account the methods of indirect propaganda and its differentiation by social and professional groups, it was possible to distinguish two main propaganda installations: short-term (mobilization) and long-term, aimed at political socialization of the population.
