The system of keeping (kormlenie) an official at the expense of the local population originated in ancient Russia. In the 1550s, feeding was abolished by Ivan IV, but this system continued to exist in various forms. In terms of their content, feeding, from the point of view of political science, as a rule, was a corrupt practice. In this article, the author attempts to trace the brief development of the feeding system, its sources and the corruption component on the basis of a historical method. Based on the example of the sphere of state control and supervision, it is concluded that there is an analogue of the feeding system in modern Russia, and brief recommendations are made to minimize this practice.
