The paper provides a description of nominal inflection in Kina Rutul, a variety of the Rutul language (< Lezgic < Nakh Daghestanian). The description is based on three concepts of paradigmatic classification: class of inflectional equivalence, inflectional type and paradigmatic effect. Class of inflectional equivalence describes main patterns of concatenation between root, case / number exponents and stem formatives. Inflectional type is responsible for the description of more subtle differencies within classes of inflection equivalence (morphological irregularities and / or non-concatenative morphophonology). These differencies are generalized over different inflectional types by means of paradigmatic effect.

This paper presents a description of three classes of lexemes in Kina Rutul (Lezgic, East Caucasian): spatial adverbs, adverbial postpositions and postpositions proper. These classes overlap in majority of East Caucasian languages. I suggest criteria of distinguishing these classes of lexemes from each other. The description includes inflection of the lexemes, their etymology and syntactic ...

This paper discusses the syntactic properties of the general perfective converb in Rutul. It can head either an independent predication or a subordinate clause. Clausal relations tests applied to the converb suggest that, when combined with another clause, it may be either coordinate or subordinate. Furthermore, the general covnerb may either fall or not to ...

In this article, I consider the inflection of property words in Archi (Lezgic, East Caucasian). While
property words show some similarities with verbs (and are indeed classified as a sybtype of verbs in Kibrik
et al.’s 1977 grammar of Archi), I argue that this similarity is too superficial to categorize them as verbs. I
first consider inflectional morphology ...

Numeral ‘one’ and demonstratives are usual sources of grammaticalization of articles in the languages of the world. Rutul numeral sa ‘one’ and demonstratives are widely used in texts in functions close to those of articles. Rutul data show that even though it is questionable whether sa can be considered an article, it can be considered ...

The paper presents quantitative data on the modifying participial clauses in Udi (Lezgic, Nakh-Daghestanian), based on text corpora. There are two participles in Udi, a perfective and an imperfective one; modifying participial clauses precede nominal heads, and the participle is clause-final within its clause. Like in other Nakh-Daghestanian languages, modifying participial clauses in Udi are ...

Aims and Objectives: We assess whether data on lexical borrowings obtained through field elicitation may point back not only to a specific donor language but also to its specific regional variety, and hence whether these data are a reliable tool for reconstructing unknown historical patterns of interaction between ethnic (sub-)groups.
Methodology: We use quantitative analysis of ...

In this paper I show how the inflectional system of the recipient language can influence the strategy of morphological integration of loanwords, and how loanwords themselves can affect the inflectional system. The paper considers morphology, morphosyntax and semantics of causative formation in Agul, a Lezgic language of Southern Daghestan (Russia). In Agul, the two most frequent causative patterns, periphrastic and compound causatives, apparently share one source of grammaticalization. In Bagvalal (East Caucasian), native place names show strongly reduced morphological inflection. They combine with spatial suffixes identical to those used on nouns and spatial adverbs and with attributive and plural suffixes identical to those of nominal genitive and plural and thus have mixed adverbial nominal morphology. В статье обсуждается ряд теоретических проблем русского словоизменения с точки зрения технической (на первый взгляд) задачи создания оптимальной таблицы склонения русских имен. Ко второй группе относится набор типов склонения (словоизменительных типов, возникающих ...

Udi (East Caucasian) possesses several means of expressing the meaning ‘other’, namely (i) the combination of a (usually distal) demonstrative with a numeral (usually ‘one’), arguably calqued from Azerbaijani, (ii) the expression originating from a combination of a demonstrative with the noun ‘arm, side’ and (iii) borrowed adjectives. It is shown that the morphological properties ...
