Epic wars change everything. The last of them began with the First World War and ended with a cold one, endangering the existence of a nation-state. A new one appeared - a market-state, but mankind never came to a unipolar world. Scientist, lawyer and politician Philip Bobbitt in "Shield of Achilles" explains why this happened, and examines the paths followed, current and that could be taken by states.
The first volume is devoted to the nature and formation of the state, its current condition. What does legitimacy depend on? Why and how are the forms of the state changing? Can a market-state provide security? Is it necessary at all? Bobbitt provides answers to these questions and warns: we may be on the verge of an unprecedented tragedy.
