Sustainable Water Management in Megacities of the Future

Megacities are the main consumers of water supplies and their population is projected to increase significantly in the future. The rise in demand for water resources (for both industrial and private consumption) is expected to be addressed by the establishment of the sustainable water management system in these cities according to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (#4 Water and sanitation, #11 Sustainable cities and communities). The goal of this paper, therefore, is to uncover global trends in urban water management, especially in sustainable water management of megacities. To achieve this goal, we examined the academic literature on such topics as urban water management in general and sustainable water management in particular,  and conducted intellectual big data analysis on the global water resources issues by means of the specialized tool for text mining – iFORA. As a result, we illustrated the changing agendas in global water management, provided the semantic map and clusters of topics in this field, represented clusters streamgraph and their life cycle chart as well as structural dynamics for 2010-2019 years. The findings of the study can contribute to the development of sustainable water management strategies in the most fast-growing cities (or ‘megacities of the future’).
