‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Critical Aspects in Advanced Human Resource Management

IGI Global Scientific Publishing, 2025.
Under the general editorship: E. Tome

This volume, Critical Aspects in Advanced Human Resource Management,
addresses the pressing, high- stakes issues that shape and challenge the field of
HRM today. The term “critical” is used deliberately—it signifies topics of great
significance, demanding thoughtful attention and, often, urgent action.
The chapters included here explore issues that are not only theoretically rich but
also practically relevant. Each contributor was invited to select a topic they believe
to be critical within the scope of human resource development and management,
and to demonstrate why it is critical—whether due to its impact on organizations, its
complexity, its recurrence in crisis contexts, or its potential to drive transformational
change. These are not peripheral concerns; they are central, and their management
can mean the difference between stagnation and strategic growth.
Our goal has been to compile a reference that serves multiple purposes. For managers,
this book can operate as a handbook for navigating crises—a resource that
combines conceptual frameworks with real- world cases and practical strategies. For
scholars and researchers, it offers a compendium of interconnected themes, encouraging
new linkages and interdisciplinary insights in a field where topics are often
treated in isolation. In the social and human sciences, such connections are vital, and
we hope this book enables deeper understanding through integrated perspectives.
We also envision this volume as a valuable study manual for students—especially
those engaging with courses focused on critical topics in management. Finally, we
hope it offers our academic peers food for thought in ongoing debates around the
evolution of HRM theory and practice.
In bringing together theoretical insights and practical applications, this book
aims to provide a well- rounded, accessible, and timely contribution to the literature
on human resource management. The critical topics discussed here are not only of
academic interest—they are the very challenges shaping the future of work, organizations,
and leadership.

This article offers reflections on A.V. Shchipkov’s book Unfinished Nazism: Genesis, Transformations, and Related Phenomena. In it, the author proposes a quite paradoxical thesis, identifying liberalism as the ideological “root” of contemporary Nazism. Previously, drawing connections between liberalism and fascism was an intellectual move typically confined to leftist academic circles. However, the author emphasizes that this particular interpretation of the connection between ...

This paper examines total factor productivity (TFP) dynamics among Russian enterprises from 2018 to 2024, using translogarithmic production function estimates for 290 industries. To address endogeneity and functional dependence issues, we employ the Ackerberg—Caves—Frazer methodology with a control function approach. Our findings reveal distinct sectoral patterns. In mining, both simple average and value-added-weighted TFP rose ...

Rozhkova K., Roshchin S., Roshchina Y.,

Sanctions and GVC resilience in developing countries: asymmetric shocks and adaptive responses
Fedyunina A., Drapkin I. M., Simachev Y. V., Area Development and Policy 2026
Trade sanctions generate asymmetric shocks in developing economies, reshaping their integration into global value chains (GVCs). Using a gravity framework covering 68 developing countries over the period 2000–2021, this paper examines how sanctions affect forward and backward GVC linkages. We find that sanctions significantly reduce both dimensions of GVC participation: backward linkages suffer deeper and ...

Revolutions or campaigns? Tearing down the Berlin Wall in the study of mass mobilization
Korotayev A., Guseinov R., Ustyuzhanin V., Political Studies Review 2026 P. 1–22
In recent years, a kind of “Berlin Wall” has emerged between the study of “revolutions” and “maximalist campaigns.” Although scholars in these two traditions analyze closely related phenomena, they use different terminology, bodies of literature, and empirical conventions. We argue that this separation is analytically costly and prevents fruitful dialogue. On one hand, this leads ...

Emotions towards algorithmic policy decision-making: direct and compensatory associations with trust in governance
Styrin E. M., Vigoda-Gadot E., Levitats Z., Asia Pacific Journal of Public Administration 2026 P. 1–23
Governance is rapidly digitising, yet how citizens’ emotions towards algorithmic policy decision-making relate to their trust in governance institutions remains understudied. Drawing on the affect-as-information model, we argue that emotions constitute a distinct input into institutional trust judgements, operating both directly and by conditioning the weight of cognitive evaluations. We test this argument with a ...
