During the development of the Russian state, significant changes took place in the system of its administrative-territorial division, usually associated with a change in political power, the growth of the state’s territory and the implementation of administrative reforms. The aim of the study is to identify spatial patterns of evolution of the system of administrative-territorial division of the Russian Empire, the RSFSR and the Russian Federation over the past 300 years at the highest level — in the provinces, republics, territories, and regions. A detailed chronological description of all the changes in the administrative-territorial division of Russia over three centuries allowed us to come to the general conclusion that in the process of evolution of the administrative-territorial division system there were alternating waves of expansion and reduction of administrative division.
