'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Машины, формирующие(ся в) логику: нейронные сети и искаженная автоматизация интеллекта в качестве статистического вывода

Новое литературное обозрение. 2019. Т. 158. № 4. С. 153–168.
Пасквинелли М.
Translator: Г. Голубков, Строкин П. С.

The text highlights the role of logic gates in the distributed architecture of neural networks, in which a generalized control loop affects each node of computation to perform pattern recognition. In this distributed and adaptive architecture of logic gates, rather than applying logic to information top-down, information turns into logic, that is, a representation of the world becomes a new function in the same world description.

Tulchinskii G. L., Философские науки 2026 Т. 68 № 6 С. 32–58
In the work, technology is considered as a special form of being, going beyond the utilitarian and instrumental understanding and forming a new ontological space. This space is described as a technocosmos or metacosmos: an autonomous and self-generating reality in which technologies do not simply serve human needs, but begin to constitute their own logic ...

AI and the Transformation of Scientific Knowledge: Hybrid Expertise and the Limits of Collins's Theory
Filatova Asya, Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 2026 Vol. 63 No. 3 P. 56–66
This article proposes a rethinking of the role of artificial intelli-gence in contemporary science through an analysis of HarryCollins’s concept of expertise. The point of departure is the ob-served tension between normative accounts of expertise –grounded in ideas of socialisation, tacit knowledge and member-ship in a form of life – and the empirical practices in ...

Portnoy S., Efremov A., Voloshin A., , in: 2026 Systems of Signal Synchronization, Generating and Processing in Telecommunications (SYNCHROINFO).: Petrozavodsk: IEEE, 2026. P. 1–4.
This paper presents a deep learning-based optimization of a list-decoding algorithm for a concatenated Hamming-Reed-Solomon code transmitted over an AWGN channel with BPSK modulation. The proposed method reformulates early termination of the erasure-pattern list as a weighted regression problem, addressing class imbalance through an asymmetric Weighted Mean Squared Error (WMSE) loss function that penalizes index ...

Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Alexander Savelev et al., Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis 2024 Vol. 34 No. 3 P. 844–854
Improving image quality is becoming an increasingly popular task, especially when working with mobile devices. One common approach to image enhancement is the use of convolutional neural networks. However, to achieve good results, such networks must be large enough, otherwise there is a risk of unwanted artifacts. In addition, large convolutional neural networks require significant ...

Функциональная агентность искусственного интеллекта: типология и градуальный подход
Karpenko I., Человек 2026 Т. 37 № 5 С. 42–58
This article examines the question of agency in artificial intelligence systems. A distinction is proposed between three types of agency: ontological, functional, and ascribed. The central thesis is that functional agency is a genuine rather than metaphorical type, which is grounded through the teleological theory of function and through a critique of the argument from ...

Vague stimulating ideas, images and metaphors in scientific thinking: researchers' work with horizons of unclear knowledge
Poddiakov A., / Series Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026. No. 7437658.
Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...
