Doctoral Student at HSE University Reveals Hidden Layout of Ancient Parion
İdil Malgil, a researcher at HSE University, conducted a UAV-based LiDAR survey of the ancient Roman city of Parion in present-day Turkey. The high density of the scans allowed the team to detect subtle terrain features concealed beneath the ground and vegetation. The survey revealed traces of entire neighbourhoods, terraced structures, and walls that had remained invisible during routine excavations and could not be identified through aerial photography. The findings have been published in Ancient Civilizations from Scythia to Siberia.

Mathematicians from Nizhny Novgorod and Shanghai Study System Stability
Mathematicians at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, in collaboration with colleagues from Tongji University in Shanghai, are investigating the fundamental causes of structural stability in systems and the mechanisms underlying its disruption. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Prof. Olga Pochinka, Head of the International Laboratory of Dynamical Systems and Applications at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and leader of the project ‘Qualitative Theory of Systems of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations,’ discusses the project, which is being implemented as part of HSE University's International Academic Cooperation programme.

Neurolinguists Assist in Awake Surgery on 11-Year-Old Patient with Epilepsy
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain took part in a rare awake neurosurgical procedure performed on an 11-year-old patient with drug-resistant epilepsy. Working alongside surgeons at the Voyno-Yasenetsky Centre of Specialised Medical Care for Children in Solntsevo, they monitored the resection of a portion of the left temporal lobe, where the epileptic focus had been identified.

Readability assessment of written Adyghe using a baseline approach
Petrunina U., Zdorova N., , in: Computational Linguistics and Intellectual Technologies. Papers from the Annual International Conference “Dialogue” (2025)Issue 23: Supplementary volume.: ., 2025. P. 1100–1109.
The study introduces a cross-linguistic approach extending the English-based Flesch Reading Ease formula for the assessment of Adyghe texts’ readability level. The method relies on the corpus-based analysis of Adyghe shallow linguistic features, i.e. syllable length, word count, and sentence length. It allows to adjust the Flesch formula in accordance with these features by means of natural language ...

Poliakova E., RHEMA.
Equasimilative constructions belong to the semantic field of comparison, but have been studied to a much less extent than comparative constructions. There are practically no areal-typological studies in this area. This paper focuses on equasimilative constructions in Khwarshi proper (Nakh-Dagestanian). Additionally, it provides an overview of equasimilative constructions in the languages of the Caucasus to determine the parameters that ...

Circassian relatives: a contribution to the synchronic and diachronic typology of the externally/internally-headed relative clause distinction
Lander Y., Studies in Language 2026 Vol. 50 No. 1 P. 33–67
This paper documents relative clause constructions in the polysynthetic Circassian languages of the West Caucasian family and attempts to establish diachronic links between them. It is shown that the Circassian languages possess both externally-headed and internally-headed relative clauses, with the latter having semantic heads that are interpreted outside of the relative clause. In addition, these ...

This study examines the evolution of the Circassian ethno-national movement, one of the most prominent in Russia, and its connection to the Adyghe diaspora communities in Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Western Europe, and the United States. In the 1990s, Circassian nationalists proposed the creation of a unifi ed Circassia, either as part of Russia or as an independent ...

Bagirokova I., Lander Y.,

Building a Universal Dependencies Treebank for a Polysynthetic Language: the Case of Abaza
Koshevoy A., Panova A., Makarchuk I., , in: Proceedings of the Sixth Workshop on Universal Dependencies (UDW, GURT/SyntaxFest 2023).: Washington: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2023. P. 1–6.
In this paper, we discuss the challenges that we faced during the construction of a Universal Dependencies treebank for Abaza, a polysynthetic Northwest Caucasian language. We propose an alternative to the morpheme-level annotation of polysynthetic languages introduced in Park et al. (2021). Our approach aims at reducing the number of morphological features, yet providing all ...

Periphrastic causative in West Circassian
Phelan P. M., Studies in Language 2022
This paper looks at a grammaticalized periphrastic causative construction in West Circassian. West Circassian is a polysynthetic language and expresses information largely through morphological means, which makes this construction all the more unusual. As interest in the complexities of polysynthetic languages grows, it is important to look at periphrastic strategies and syntactic operations in these ...

Bagirokova I., Ryzhova D.,
This paper investigates the semantics of hiding in Adyghe from a typological perspective. There are four verb stems: ʁebəλə- ‘to hide’, wəχʷəme- ‘to protect, to cover up’, wəŝefə- ‘to conceal’, and xeḳʷečʼẹ - ‘to mix, to blend in’. The central verb of the field, ʁebəλə- ‘to hide’, describes situations where the object is put somewhere ...
