Функционирование глагола werden в памятниках немецкой духовно-мистической литературы XIII–XIV вв.
The polyfunctionality of German werden causes constant interest in its behaviour in synchronic and diachronic studies. Within the framework of the functional theories of grammar, the lexical sources lying in the basis of grammatical constructions and grams affect their semantics. The analytical grams of passive and future in German are built using an auxiliary verb werden. However, both forms are problematic to define their exact semantics. In case of passive it is problematic to define the aspect component in stative and dynamic passive. For future-periphrases, it stays unclear if they have temporal or modal primary meaning. So it makes sense to research the functions of werden from the time period when the futureperiphrasis developed. This is considered to have happened in the XIII–
XIVth centuries, in Middle and Early New High German. In the context of the future-periphrases studies, future time references are analyzed in passive-periphrasis, copula, auxiliary, as well as the development of German future-periphrasis. I try to show that during the development the werden-future-periphrasis there was a semantic shift when
a future time reference of werden developed an additional lexical meaning which was later lost. That gave an advantage to werden-periphrasis over corresponding periphrases with modal verbs. The analysis is based on materials from German medieval mysticism, namely two apocalyptic and two didactic poems about mystical marriage. The prevailing future time reference of the apocalyptic and bridal mysticism makes them a promising basis for a study on functioning of the future tenses. The poems date back to the XIII–XIVth centuries, that is to the period of the development of the German future-periphrasis, and were written in Upper German, namely Bavarian and Alemannic, and Rhine Franconian.
