The article studies the problem of “expert power” in the modern society. Two approaches in practices involving working with people are opposed: the dominating expert-diagnostic approach and the approached that can be designated as understanding, oriented on supporting the client’s “author position” in solving their life problems. A vivid example of the practice of the second type is mediation. The differences in approaches determine the specifics of corresponding communication positions of the specialists. The methodological basis for both approaches are studied. In educating the future specialists of “communication professions”, it is very important to pay attention not only to the communication techniques as such but also to the understanding of the essence of the approach that only allows occupying the corresponding position adequately.
