LANDSCAPE WITH A MILL FROM THE ARKHANGELSKOE STATE MUSEUM ESTATE:
JOHANN ANTON EISMANN AND VENETIAN LANDSCAPE IN THE LATE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY
A reassessment of the authorship of a landscape at the Arkhangelskoe State Museum Estate
(Inv. No. 150‑ж), given to Marco Ricci in the time of Prince Nikolay Borisovich Yusupov. The painting was
transformed by conservation undertaken 2010–2012 at the Grabar Art Conservation Centre in Moscow,
where it was also subjected to technical analysis. Close stylistic analogies lead us to suggest an attribution to
the German painter Johann Anton Eismann (1621–1698), possibly in collaboration with his pupil and adopted
son Carlo Eismann-Brisighella (1679 – after 1718). The only known dated work by Johann Anton Eismann,
Battle, is in the Hermitage Museum. The work of this artist, which has only recently attracted scholarly interest,
played no small role in the development of Venetian landscape painting in the late seventeenth century.
