Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

The article examines the phenomenon of extraordinary police violence in democratic states, which manifested during several protest waves in recent years. In statu reprobationis: историк Давид Баевский в центре кампании по борьбе с фальсификацией истории ВКП(б) 1931–1932 гг.
Бадиков Р. А., Диалог со временем 2026 № 96 С. 90–105
The development of Soviet historical science in the 1930s–1950s was characterized by an increasing role of political and ideological campaigns designed to repressively confirm the Stalinist conception of the country’s and ruling party’s history. Researchers who found themselves involuntarily, and often accidentally, at the center of such campaigns faced public and professional ostracism and had ...

Belenkov V., Полития: Анализ. Хроника. Прогноз 2024 № 1(112) С. 164–186
Although the relationship between state coercive measures and protests has long been studied in Political Science, there are a number of gaps in the modern research studies about the impact of repressions on street protest activity. A serious flaw in these studies is their focus on the influence of repressions on the existing protest campaigns, with little attention to ...

In most of current papers devoted to the analysis of protest-repression nexus, the research design misses the dynamic nature of this nexus, which seems methodologically incorrect. The analysis of the dynamics allows us to identify the role of various factors influencing the course of this conflict. The variety of different dynamics of the number of protesters and the ...

Then we consider developments since ...

Rybakov V., Вестник архивиста 2023 № 2 С. 589–601
In reference and research publications there is almost no information on most heads of the republican justice administration body, the RSFSR People’s Commissariat for Justice (PCJ RSFSR), of 1941–45. This is largely due to limitations of the source base and secondariness of republican bodies in the USSR. Meanwhile, during the war, the republican justice administration bodies ...

Belenkov V. E., Monitoring Obshchestvennogo Mneniya: Ekonomichekie i Sotsial'nye Peremeny 2021 No. 6 P. 119–144
This research paper aims at learning whether Internet penetration and online censorship affect repression against civil society organization (CSO) capacity to prevent street protest events and/or reduce protest participant numbers in the long term. Modeling the Protest-Repression Nexus

Over the last 30 years, numerous studies have shown that repression can de-crease, increase, or have some kind of a nonlinear or mixed impact on the intensity of protest. This problem is usually referred to as the “protest-repression nexus” or the “punishment puzzle”, and it is still not resolved. The mathematical and computational model that we present in ...

Antisemitism in the “Jewish NKVD” in Soviet Ukraine on the Eve of World War II
Viola L. A., Holocaust and Genocide Studies 2020 Vol. 34 No. 3 P. 393–408
Following the German invasion of the USSR on June 22, 1941, murderous violence against local Jews broke out in many localities of the territories it had occupied in the wake of the 1939 Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact. In particular, organizers demanded revenge for the recent Stalinist repressions and deportations. Participants claimed that the “Jewish Soviet state,” ...

This paper explores the relationship between the characteristics of a street protest and its effectiveness. We propose a new approach to solving the problem through the use of a combination of several statistical techniques: the logistic regression models with mixed effects from the Frequentist approach, the hierarchical modeling from the Bayesian approach, the propensity score matching from the Quasiexperimental approach ...

Criminalized Liaisons: Soviet Women and Allied Sailors in Wartime Arkhangel'sk
Novikova L., Journal of Contemporary History 2020 Vol. 55 No. 4 P. 745–763
From 1941 to 1945 thousands of British and American sailors came to the northern Soviet ports of Arkhangel’sk and Molotovsk with Lend-Lease convoys. On the shore they made many casual contacts with local residents, in particular with Soviet women. These contacts came under close scrutiny of the Soviet authorities who tried to limit the alleged ...
