Джон Рескин в "Круге чтения" Л. Толстого: о творческой истории легенды "Большая Медведица (Ковш)"
The article deals with the textual history of the legend “The Big Dipper (Bucket)”, which is part of Leo Tolstoy’s “The Circle of Reading” as one of the “weekly readings”. The author the discovers original English text and compares its with Tolstoy’s translation,. Analysis of the legend in the cultural and biographical context shows the ways in which Tolstoy transforms other writers’ texts and what reasons prompted him to address them. The author of the article explains that Tolstoy’s intention to translate this legend was his interest in John Ruskin’s works and in particular his fairy tale “The King of the Golden River”, very similar to the legend. Sharing many Ruskin’s ideas, Tolstoy, nevertheless, criticizes his religious views. The article traces how he transforms the religious motifs of the according his own religious ethics.
