‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

The paper presents quantitative data on the modifying participial clauses in Udi (Lezgic, Nakh-Daghestanian), based on text corpora. There are two participles in Udi, a perfective and an imperfective one; modifying participial clauses precede nominal heads, and the participle is clause-final within its clause. Like in other Nakh-Daghestanian languages, modifying participial clauses in Udi are ...

Being a pripheral member of the linguistic area in question, Udi possesses an even ...

“Other” Strategies in the Eastern Caucasus (Part I): Data from Udi
Lander Yu., Maisak T., Iran and the Caucasus 2021 Vol. 25 No. 3 P. 272–283
Udi (East Caucasian) possesses several means of expressing the meaning ‘other’, namely (i) the combination of a (usually distal) demonstrative with a numeral (usually ‘one’), arguably calqued from Azerbaijani, (ii) the expression originating from a combination of a demonstrative with the noun ‘arm, side’ and (iii) borrowed adjectives. It is shown that the morphological properties ...

Dybo A., Мальцева В. С., Шеймович А. В. et al., Вопросы диалектологии 2018 № 1-2 С. 44–54
The article deals with some facts of the behavior of verbal personal markers in one of Khakas dialects. These phenomena that have parallels in other Turkic languages and dialects demonstrate the effect of two different trends. First, we see the "paradigmatization" of personal conjugation, i.e. the analogous development of the word forms. It is caused ...

Some specific features of the use of personal markers in the Beltir dialect of Khakas have parallels in other Turkic languages and dialects, and result from two different tendencies.

Borrowing from an unrelated language in support of intragenetic tendencies: The case of the conditional clitic =sa in Udi
Maisak T., Diachronica 2019 Vol. 36 No. 3 P. 337–383
Udi is a Nakh-Daghestanian (Lezgic) language spoken in northern Azerbaijan, which has undergone many contact-induced changes due to the influence of unrelated languages of the eastern Caucasus (Indo-European, Turkic). A recent change is the borrowing of the conditional enclitic =sa from Azerbaijani (Turkic). In Udi, this marker can combine with finite indicative tenses, resulting in a series of derived ‘realis’ ...

P-omission under sluicing, [P clitic] and the nature of P-stranding
Philippova T., , in: ConSOLE XXII: Proceedings of the 22nd Conference of the Student Organization of Linguistics in Europe (8-10 January 2014, Lisbon).: Leiden: Leiden University Centre for Linguistics, 2014. Ch. 8 P. 133–155.
This paper discusses preposition (P) omission under sluicing (John talked with someone but I don’t know _ who) and the ability of P to take a clitic pronoun as a complement (We talked about’im), correlated with P-stranding (the ability of P to stay in situ when its complement undergoes movement, Who are you talking with_?) ...

The Aorist / Perfect distinction in Nizh Udi
Maisak T., , in: The semantics of verbal categories in Nakh-Daghestanian languages: Tense, aspect, evidentiality, mood and modalityVol. 16.: Leiden: Brill, 2018. P. 120–165.
The paper considers the two main synthetic past tenses in Udi and argues that they should be identified as the aorist (‘perfective past’) and the perfect (‘past with present relevance’) respectively. While the former is the main means of foregounding in discourse, the latter has the prototypical ‘current relevance’ meaning, and is also used with ...

Cогласование по множественному числу в удинском языке
Maisak T., Acta Linguistica Petropolitana. Труды института лингвистических исследований 2017 Т. 13 № 1 С. 680–724
В системе личного согласования в удинском языке (лезгинская группа нахско-дагестанской семьи) различается шесть лично-числовых значений: противопоставление по числу проводится во всех лицах, включая третье. Согласование происходит с субъектом — агенсом переходного глагола либо основным актантом непереходного глагола. При этом нередки случаи, когда при субъекте третьего лица, выраженном именной группой во множественном числе, согласование происходит по единственному. В статье на ...
