‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

No ‘iota’ type-shifter in Kazym Khanty
Tiutiunnikova V., Mikhailov Stiopa, Golosov F., Proceedings of Sinn und Bedeutung 2025 No. 29 P. 1593–1608
In this paper, we present new challenging data from Kazym Khanty (a Uralic language spoken in Western Siberia, Russia): in this articleless language, bare singular and bare dual NPs in argument positions can receive indefinite readings on par with definite ones, contradicting the predictions of the classic neo-Carlsonian approach (Chierchia, 1998; Dayal, 2004). We argue ...

Making sense of variable number agreement in Russian
Ivlieva N., Podobryaev A., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2025 No. 1 P. 62–77
In this paper, we focus on Russian quantified noun phrases that are known to be able to trigger plural verbal agreement or no agreement at all. Descriptively, we offer a novel generalization: when such phrases trigger plural verbal agreement, they cannot be interpreted in the immediate scope of negation. We show that this generalization falls ...

Noun complement clauses with a demonstrative determiner in Russian
Knyazev M., Journal of Slavic Linguistics 2023 Vol. 31 No. FASL 30 issue P. 1–19
A lesser-known type of noun complement clause construction in Russian is discussed, in which N + čto-clause is preceded by the distal demonstrative tot. The construction involves a non-anaphoric non-deictic use of tot, which depends on the presence of a declarative (or relative) CP. Special distributional properties of the construction are discussed, such as its ...

Севернохантыйская посессивность и типология детерминации
Mikhailov S., Родной язык: лингвистический журнал 2023 № 2 С. 6–51
In many Uralic languages, possessive agreement markers form a special determiner system. Following several studies that argue for grammaticalization of Uralic possessives into determiners, the current study describes the semantics of four such determiners in the Kazym dialect of Northern Khanty, based on original field data, and sets them against the background of recent results ...

Semantics of the Northern Khanty Salient Article: Definiteness, salience, and obviation
Mikhailov S., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2024 No. 1 P. 7–38
Uralic possessive agreement markers often function as determiners. This paper presents a case study of the Northern Khanty (Kazym dialect) 2sg Possessive that developed into a “salient article”. The Salient Article is definite as it requires informational uniqueness and familiarity, but its distribution is narrower than the distribution of previously described definite determiner types. It ...

Case Marking and Definiteness in Slavic Appositional Constructions
Logvinova N., Slovene 2022 Vol. 11 No. 1 P. 281–304
This paper is a corpus-based study of Slavic appositional constructions. Out of material taken from seven Slavic languages, two aspects of the morphosyntax of close appositions in Slavic are considered: case concord and definiteness marking. The first section of the paper considers the factors that affect case concord in appositions in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Czech, ...

This paper presents the system of nominal demonstratives in Cigogo language spoken in Tanzania. The system includes 4 sets of forms build by reduplication of the pronominal prefix that is further suffixed with formants no, o, lya. Besides the special deictic (proximal, medial, distant to/from speaker/hearer) and anaphoric functions, they fulfill a wide range of discourse functions: anaphoric, cataphoric, ...

Russian nibud'-indefinites and Neg-Raising
Denis Pisarenko, Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2022 Vol. 5 No. 1 P. 72–90
This paper discusses the phenomenon of ambiguous interpretation of Russian nibud’-indefinites in Neg-Raising contexts. There are two major approaches to Neg-Raising: the syntactic approach which considers it an instance of the syntactic process of raising and the pragmatic approach which takes it as a result of pragma-semantic processes happening to NegRaising predicates. In this work ...

Logvinova N., Acta Linguistica Petropolitana. Труды института лингвистических исследований 2019 Т. 2 № 15 С. 86–129
This article aims to describe the non-possessive functions of the third person possessive affix in the Maloe Karachkino dialect of Chuvash. It is known from the literature on standard Chuvash that in addition to indicating possessive relation to the third person, possessive marker allomorphs -i and -ë are used to mark noun phrases with the ...

Русское местоимение ТАМ как средство анафоры к актанту
Letuchiy A., Вопросы языкознания 2021 Т. 2021 № 4 С. 72–90
The present article addresses a special use of the Russian locative pronoun tam: the use represented in examples like ‘I talked to her — no understanding of the situation there’. In those contexts, tam refers to a participant (usually animate), rather than a location. After a brief sketch of other uses, I describe the rules and restrictions on the ...

Diagnosing Kazym Khanty unpossessives, or how to tell a synchronically independent marker from its diachronic source
Stiopa Mikhailov, Ural-Altaic Studies 2024 No. 4(55) P. 31–56
Uralic possessive agreement suffixes often develop determiner-like functions. Several authors have suggested monosemic analyses of such functions as derived from the basic possessive meaning. However, recent studies have argued that the functions they investigate must be treated as synchronically independent markers because they do not behave morphosyntactically in the same way that their corresponding proper ...

Making Weak Memory Models Fair
Lahav O., Namakonov E., Oberhauser J. et al., Proceedings of the ACM on Programming Languages 2021 Vol. 5 No. OOPSLA Article 98
Liveness properties, such as termination, of even the simplest shared-memory concurrent programs under sequential consistency typically require some fairness assumptions about the scheduler. Under weak memory models, we observe that the standard notions of thread fairness are insufficient, and an additional fairness property, which we call memory fairness, is needed. In this paper, we propose ...

Eye movement control in Turkish sentence reading
Özkan A., Beken Fikri F., Kırkıcı B. et al., The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology 2021 Vol. 74 No. 2 P. 377–397
Reading requires the assembly of cognitive processes across a wide spectrum from low-level visual perception to high-level discourse comprehension. One approach of unravelling the dynamics associated with these processes is to determine how eye movements are influenced by the characteristics of the text, in particular which features of the words within the perceptual span maximise ...

Статья посвящена взаимодействию анафорических указательных выражений с параллельными жестами рук и головы на материале мультимодального корпуса RUPEX. Анализ выявил ряд корреляций между ролью говорящего (Рассказчик / Пересказчик / Комментатор) и его невербальным поведением. Было обнаружено, что Пересказчик, не видевший фильма, чаще прибегал к указательной анафоре, по сравнению с Рассказчиком. По-видимому, данными действиями Пересказчик стремился воссоздать ...

Evidentiality and update semantics of Komi-Zyrian past tenses
Popova D., на рассмотрении 2025 P. 1–14
We have examined the evidential contrast between the first and the second past tense morphemes in Komi-Zyrian. We found that in resultative contexts, the first past tense morphology and the second past tense morphology compete with each other. While the use of the second past tense morpheme signals that the speaker has indirect (inferential or hearsay) evidence for the ...
