The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

No ‘iota’ type-shifter in Kazym Khanty
Tiutiunnikova V., Mikhailov Stiopa, Golosov F., Proceedings of Sinn und Bedeutung 2025 No. 29 P. 1593–1608
In this paper, we present new challenging data from Kazym Khanty (a Uralic language spoken in Western Siberia, Russia): in this articleless language, bare singular and bare dual NPs in argument positions can receive indefinite readings on par with definite ones, contradicting the predictions of the classic neo-Carlsonian approach (Chierchia, 1998; Dayal, 2004). We argue ...

Causative Suffixes in Tatyshly Udmurt: How Native and Borrowed Morphemes Co-Exist
Belova D., Tomsk Journal of Linguistics and Anthropology 2024 Vol. 1 No. 43 P. 9–19
The paper deals with morphological causatives in the Tatyshly subdialect of the Udmurt language (Republic of Bashkortostan). Surrounded by the Turkic languages (Tatar and Bashkir), Tatyshly Udmurt developed a more complex system of causative markers than Standard Udmurt. It consists of two suffixes: -t, of Uralic origins, and a Turkic borrowing -ttə̑ r absent in Standard Udmurt. In ...

Making sense of variable number agreement in Russian
Ivlieva N., Podobryaev A., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2025 No. 1 P. 62–77
In this paper, we focus on Russian quantified noun phrases that are known to be able to trigger plural verbal agreement or no agreement at all. Descriptively, we offer a novel generalization: when such phrases trigger plural verbal agreement, they cannot be interpreted in the immediate scope of negation. We show that this generalization falls ...

Севернохантыйское анафорическое местоимение на фоне некоторых типологических обобщений
Shaldov A., Kozlov A.,

Russian nibud'-indefinites and Neg-Raising
Denis Pisarenko, Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2022 Vol. 5 No. 1 P. 72–90
This paper discusses the phenomenon of ambiguous interpretation of Russian nibud’-indefinites in Neg-Raising contexts. There are two major approaches to Neg-Raising: the syntactic approach which considers it an instance of the syntactic process of raising and the pragmatic approach which takes it as a result of pragma-semantic processes happening to NegRaising predicates. In this work ...

Referential systems
Budennaya E., , in: Encyclopedia of Slavic Languages and Linguistics Online.: Brill, 2020.
The article provides an overview of anaphoric and subject referential expressions across all Slavic languages. It is divided into three major sections. The first section discusses different interpretations of the term “referential system” and a number of related terms, such as pro-drop properties, null subjects and zero expressions. The second section outlines several typological features ...

Making Weak Memory Models Fair
Lahav O., Namakonov E., Oberhauser J. et al., Proceedings of the ACM on Programming Languages 2021 Vol. 5 No. OOPSLA Article 98
Liveness properties, such as termination, of even the simplest shared-memory concurrent programs under sequential consistency typically require some fairness assumptions about the scheduler. Under weak memory models, we observe that the standard notions of thread fairness are insufficient, and an additional fairness property, which we call memory fairness, is needed. In this paper, we propose ...

SAY-complementizers and indexical shift in Poshkart Chuvash: With emphasis on communicative reception reports
Knyazev M., Studies in Language 2022 Vol. 46 No. 2 P. 402–452
Although SAY-complementizers have been extensively documented, the question of the forms used in this function and their speci c properties has received less attention. The paper focuses on the complementizer tenine (an action nominalization of SAY), which is used with communicative recep- tion verbs (‘hear’, ‘read’, etc.), in a dialect of Chuvash (Turkic). The main ...

Evidentiality and update semantics of Komi-Zyrian past tenses
Popova D., на рассмотрении 2025 P. 1–14
We have examined the evidential contrast between the first and the second past tense morphemes in Komi-Zyrian. We found that in resultative contexts, the first past tense morphology and the second past tense morphology compete with each other. While the use of the second past tense morpheme signals that the speaker has indirect (inferential or hearsay) evidence for the ...

Reported speech in Kakabe: Loose syntax with flexible indexicality
Nikitina T., Vydrina A., Folia Linguistica 2020 Vol. 54 No. 1 P. 133–166
Mainstream approaches to the typology of reported discourse have been based on the notion of a direct-indirect continuum: reported speech constructions are traditionally analyzed as conforming to or deviating from the “ideals” of European direct and indirect speech. This study argues that continuum based approaches fail to distinguish between two dimensions of variation that are systematically discriminated in a number ...

К вопросу о малоизученном факте экспансии местоимений в ижорском языке
Budennaya E., Труды института русского языка им. В.В. Виноградова 2020 Т. 4 № 26 С. 34–48
This article presents a diachronic study of third-person pronouns' expansion in the Soikkola dialect of the Ingrian language (Uralic family, Finnic group). A preliminary analysis of the data revealed that all personal subject pronouns are by default explicitly expressed. This pattern is unusual for other Uralic languages, where pronouns are mostly omitted either in all three grammatical persons, ...
