‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Barsukova S., Социологические исследования 2024 № 5 С. 128–140
Talking about weddings in Kazakhstan can be reduced to one phrase – very beautiful, but very expensive. A plethora of rituals accompanying the wedding, from matchmaking to post-wedding visits, determines the scale of expenses incurred by the families of the bride and groom. Traditions endow the bride and groom with specific expenses, which leads to the separation of ...

Mozhaysky A., Издателство “ИТИ”, 2020.

Gifts to government
Slemrod J., Yulia Kuchumova, International Tax and Public Finance 2023 Vol. 30 No. 2 P. 453–492
Gifts to government might provide warm glow to some citizens, especially if they can be earmarked toward specifc government activities. We develop a model in which such gifts may be privately worthwhile, even for those people who evade taxes, and describe the conditions under which this will be the case. The latter can occur when ...

Trubnikova E., Мир России: Социология, этнология 2022 Т. 31 № 1 С. 25–48
National academic excellence programs aim to increase the competitiveness of national universities at the international level. However, these initiatives may lead to very different results depending on the country of implementation. This study analyses hidden relationships inside academic networks, which sometimes force these networks to function against general public interests. It draws on the theory ...

In the proposed article, based on in-depth interviews with women in large families, the author discusses the following hypothesis: in families where, as children are born, conjugality does not give way to household and parenthood, a sense of community in marriage is enhanced. This arises in families where a man, as children are born, becomes ...

In this paper, we argue that the priest has a unique structural position to initiate and promote gift exchange. Gift exchange is an important mode of economic integration, one that prevents both cutthroat competition and a parasitic dependence on a centralized hierarchy. In dwelling on gift exchange theory, we demonstrate why the promotion of gifts ...

Larkina T., Yudin G., / ПСТГУ. Серия 2221-7320 "Материалы исследовательского семинара «Социология религии»". 2015.
Since its inception social science has been concerned with producing solidarity from social atomization. How divided individuals can be united in a persistent community? How collective life and working towards common good can transcend narrow self-interest? In this paper we approach these questions from the perspective of the theory of gift exchange. Gift exchange reveals ...
